October round-up: Ireland’s best farming, COP28, IMS Marketing Workshop, Agri-Tech and all you need to know from World Meat Congress & Anuga 23

The GMA Insights Report for October 2023 contains:

  • The Big Five - our must knows for October 2023:

    • World Meat Congress held on 11 - 13 October, was the first in five years since COVID, held in Maastricht, the Netherlands. The theme of this year’s Congress was Meeting Society and Consumer. GMA’s Laura Ryan was in attendance, sharing GMA focus areas and how to support industry. (page 3)  

    • Global opportunities for automation and new technologies? Following DEFRA’s £270 million funding to Agri-Tech in the UK, building on commitments at the Farm to Fork Summit at Downing Street earlier this year, we look at global opportunities for automation and technology which could mean investment at on-farm level. (page 4)

    • Ireland’s Demonstrative Farming was seen first-hand in a recent visit to Ireland, inspiring GMA to look at what Irish farmers are doing to make their agriculture system one of the most sustainable in the world. (page 5)

    • The IMS Marketing Workshop took place this month, and GMA's Eleanor Luther was in Dublin to attend and record reaction and thoughts whilst on the ground. (page 5)

    • Less than 50 days until COP28! The Final Activation Kit which has been prepared by GMA in the COP28 resources folder, is ready for industry to use – this includes a set of Nutrition Key Messages on social tiles, as well as the engagement tracker, 101 Key Info document and a full suite of social media assets - click here (page 8)

  • Other Sector Snapshots - best practices & shared challenges from our community including other news of interest:

    • The UK’s new Love Pork website, for consumers looking for pork recipe inspiration. It is a modern, user-friendly platform to showcase nutritious and budget-friendly pork recipes. Find out more at lovepork.co.uk.

    • PGI Welsh Lamb has its shining moment this month at the Rugby World Cup in France, as a roadshow featuring the cooking of Hybu Cig Cymru-Meat Promotion Wales’ (HCC) lamb tours the country. Read more here.

    • Anuga 2023 - The huge trade show took place in October, with Kevin Hollinrake MP visiting to hear what can be done to support industry. He hosted a roundtable which included Michelle White from Dunbia and it was a well-received opportunity to tell government what was needed to support trade and opportunities.

  • Opinion - column by Diana Rodgers, RD:

    • Are we seeing the fall of alternative meat? There are less headlines about investments and more double-down cognitive dissonance, Humans are deeply unwilling to change their minds, even when faced with declining sales and scientific evidence.
