November round-up: The World is Watching COP28, Innovation & Collaboration, Italy cultivated meat ban, City Meat Lecture and much more

The GMA Insights Report for November 2023 contains:

  • The Big Five - our must knows for November 2023:

    • City Meat Lecture
The Worshipful Company of Butchers and Pilgrim’s UK hosted the renowned City Meat Lecture at the Butchers‘ Hall in London on 23 November. Keynote speaker and friend of GMA, Professor David Hughes shared his take on the red meat industry and was later joined on the panel by Katherine Haenelt from the OSI UK group, and Harriet Wilson of Meat Business Women - working with our co-founder Laura Ryan on attracting and retaining female talent. (page 3)

    • Regenerative Agriculture
A recent report by the Center on Global Food and Agriculture finds that regenerative agriculture is the approach many farmers in the USA are taking to increase farm resiliency by improving soil health, restoring natural resources, and increasing biodiversity through farming practices. (page 4)

    • Innovation + Collaboration
We need to talk and work with other industries, including emerging alternative proteins, in order to guide change. To address this, our Networking Call held this month, hosted speakers included Aleph Farms, the cell-based ag company, and Jack A. Bobo, to address what the future in 2050 may look like. (page 4)

    • Italy bans Cultivated Meat
Italy have this month banned the production and sale of cultivated meat, signalling the position of Giorgia Meloni’s government in firmly defending Italy’s culinary tradition. (page 4)

    • The World is Watching Dubai as COP28 begins
Our GMA COP28 resources have been prepared for industry to use – this includes a set of Nutrition Key Messages on social tiles, as well as the engagement tracker, 101 Key Info document and a full suite of social media assets - let us know via eleanorvlimited@outlook.com if you would like access (page 8)

  • Other Sector Snapshots - best practices & shared challenges from our community including other news of interest:

    • Red meat linked to increased Type 2 Diabetes - the critique
There have been media headlines with regards to the correlation between red meat consumption and Type 2 Diabetes. A new paper entitled Red meat intake and risk of Type 2 diabetes in a prospective cohort study of United States females and males has led AHDB lead nutritionist Kate Arthur to provide a critique and response; namely again to point to the body of science available. (page 4)

    • FAO roadmap to be released
The United Nations’ Food & Agriculture Organisation have planned to publish a Global Food Systems’ RoadMap to 1.5C at COP28, as reported by Bloomberg this week

    • EU Deforestation Regulation
With just over a year until the EU Deforestation Regulations (EUDR) come into effect, organisations need to act now to ensure their supply chain is ready for 30 December 2024. The regulations require companies (trading in cattle, cocoa, coffee, oil palm, rubber, soya, and wood), to ensure that goods don’t result from ‘any recent deforestation.’

  • Latest Commentary - important and relevant news articles and opinion pieces summarised; this month including great YouTube videos and podcast suggestions.

  • Opinion - column by Diana Rodgers, RD:

    • How the anti-meat narrative is really about people eating too many calories overall, not overeating meat.

    • Fun, nutrition-fact based holiday graphics for you to use and share that are linked on page 3 of the report.

    • How the Meatless Mondays campaign is simply causing too much harm to school children, and now it’s even spreading to hospitals – where protein intake is critical to recovering from illness.

  • Collaboration & Resources - Our GMA COP28 resources are available to arm industry with messaging to support our position in global food systems. As mentioned, please email eleanorvlimited@outlook.com for access to these resources or to be added to the COP28 WhatsApp group if you in Dubai for the event. (page 8)

  • Global Industry Calendar - A complete look at events and global moments throughout 2023 which affect and involve industry.

We’d like to say a big thank you to our funders for their support this year, as it is the last report of 2023. Our GMA partners have committed funding to ensure the GMA activity and benefits are achieved. Our partners also have input into the strategic direction of GMA and its future. The key to all GMA activity is in the breadth of our network and therefore, the funding kindly contributed by our partners enable the activity to be open to all in the global meat and livestock sector, each bringing further insight and amplification. Thank you to our partners for their leadership, generosity and ‘for the greater good’ ethos.
